Have you picked a photographer for your wedding yet?
“Now very often events are set up for photographers… The weddings are orchestrated about the photographers taking the picture, because if it hasn’t been photographed it doesn’t really exist.” ~ Elliott Erwitt
I don’t want to say that your wedding is only about the photographs, because that would be simplistic and kind of terrible. Weddings should be about love and unity and bringing your Village together. When you get right down to it though, weddings are also a crazy whirlwind. No matter how determined you are to slow down and savour the day, it can really feel like a blur. You need an amazing photographer who can capture the beauty and joy of the day so that you’ll always remember it… especially in case you don’t quite remember it!
I feel very lucky because I really clicked with the photographer who took our engagement and family photos: Amy Jean Photography. When it came to choosing a wedding photographer, I had no doubt in my mind that I wanted to work with her again. I think that clicking is really important. Of course, seeing the style of photos the photographers has taken before is also really essential. You certainly want to look at a number of different photographers’ portfolios to find a style and an “eye” that resonates with you. Along with “the look” though, just feeling really good with the person is also very important.
If you’re following the traditional wedding format, you’re going to spend a lot of time with your photographer on the day of the wedding. You want to make sure that they are assertive but also patient and friendly enough to handle the wedding party and your guests for all of the posed photos… because that’s a really challenging part of the job!
You also want to make sure your photographer is going to be on the ball and proactive about capturing all of the wonderful spontaneity of your wedding. They are the person who will bring the many beautiful moments of your wedding to life…moments that you might not catch yourself…moments that are special or secret or fleeting…moments that you want to be able to hang on to and enjoy forever.
Go ahead… Skrimp, be frugal, bargain…do what you have to do to stay within your budget…just don’t cut corners when hiring your photographer. When you’re hiring a photographer, you’re paying for a long day of work, a wealth of knowledge and expertise, hours of post-production work and a lifetime of captured memories. Believe me, a great photographer earns their pay and is worth every penny they charge!
Your photographer is one of the most important people you will ever work with on your wedding day. Take the time to choose someone wisely.
