Are you wondering if you should put in that extra effort for your bridal gown appointment?
Our answer is yes, you should!
Since we opened up our bridal store in St. Catharines, we’ve had many brides-to-be ask us if they should do their hair and makeup for their appointments, along with many other questions like what undergarments to wear, and who to bring with you to your appointment. We’re always happy to help our brides make the most of their time with us in searching for THE dress.
When it comes to having your hair and makeup done, our answer is definitely a yes. Before you can say yes to the dress, you’re going to need to be able to envision how you’re going to look on the big day. When you’re coming in off the street in a very casual way, with minimal or no makeup and your “street” hair, it can be really hard to to get the full picture of you in the gown. That can lead to a lot of doubt that often makes it harder for brides to make decisions.
Here are our top tips and tricks on how to rock your hair and makeup style during your bridal gown appointment:
One of the most important aspects about the makeup look you go for during your bridal gown appointment is just to be you. You want to feel your prettiest as you try on gown after gown and feeling comfortable and happy with the way you look is part of that. If you’re used to doing a full face of makeup including foundation, blush, eyeliner, and mascara, there’s no reason not to do so for your appointment.
However, if you’re not accustomed to wearing much or any makeup, it can be really hard to feel “right” when you put on a glamourous wedding gown. This is probably the fanciest garment that you’ll ever wear, so putting on some makeup that still feels true to who you are will help you to shine. Also, keep in mind that white and ivory gowns can wash most people out if they aren’t wearing at least a little bit of makeup. Don’t overdo it; you should still feel like you, not like a drag queen.
Keep It Light
We do suggest that you try to keep your makeup light and natural. Trying on gown after gown is almost like a workout and can be a little tiring! You don’t want to be sweating through your makeup. Also, keep in mind that your wedding day is about bringing out your natural beauty. Think “day makeup”, rather than makeup for a wild night on the town.
Skip the Bold Lip and Self-Tanner
While we do love a bold red lip under other circumstances, it probably isn’t the best bet when you’ll be around lots of white and ivory dresses. It’s probably a good idea to skip the bright red lipstick just to make sure you don’t get anything on the dresses by accident. Also, avoid using self-tanner in the days leading up to your bridal gown appointment. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your makeup!
Style It “Roughly” Like You Might on the Big Day
When you look in the mirror for your first glance at a gown, it’s helpful to have your hair styled somewhat like you’ll want to have it on the big day. This will help you get a sense of the full picture. Now, that doesn’t mean you need to hire a hair stylist or spend hours doing intricate an intricate ‘do. Our suggestion is that if you plan to have your hair in an updo, you could simply pull your hair back to keep it off of your face and shoulders. Or if you’re planning on wearing your hair in a half up, half down style, you could pull it up into a half pony. Having your hair resemble a similar style to how it might be on your wedding day can help you get the full impact of what you’ll look like in your gown.
Bring a Hair Clip
No matter what hairstyle you’re going with for your bridal gown appointment, we suggest bringing an extra hair clip or hair tie. This will help both you and your gown stylist to keep you hair off of your shoulders and out of dress zippers as you’re stepping in and out of different gowns. Bringing a hair clip or hair tie is an easy way to make trying on gowns more convenient and comfortable. You can always take your hair down once you’re in the gown and ready to show your entourage.
Doing your hair and makeup for your bridal gown appointment doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little time, effort, and pre-planning, you can rock your appointment and set yourself up for success as your try on gowns.
